From Melbourne to Rwanda

Before coffee, Julia Tink ran her own PR agency for eight years. Her husband, Trent Knox, brought experience from Lavazza. A visit to Rwanda in 2015 helped reshape their vision for a coffee business, placing growers and their communities at its heart.

That support has taken practical forms, including land, coffee plants, training and agricultural expertise for the women of the Cocagi Femme cooperative.

What do avocados have to do with coffee?

A new coffee plantation can take around three years to establish before its first harvest. That is a long wait for an income.

Alongside coffee plants, St Remio has helped fund seedlings for crops including avocados, passionfruit and tomatoes. These give growers other sources of income while the coffee plantation develops. It is a small detail that says a lot about the thought behind their support.

Skill, passed down through generations

Among the women St Remio supports is Dafrose Mukanyabyenda, a mother of five whose parents also grew coffee. She learned from them when she was young. Today, her work includes selecting well-ripened coffee cherries, pruning and caring for the crop.

That knowledge is part of the craft behind a cup. St Remio brings its own expertise to developing blends, working with specialist Q and R Graders and sourced only Rainforest Alliance certified beans.
